The non-enzyme component in the gastric juice includes HCl and castle intrinsic factor.

  • HCl helps in checking the microbial growth in the stomach. It also activates proenzymes into enzymes. It converts pepsinogen which is a proteolytic enzyme into active pepsin. Gastric juice in infants also has prorenin which helps in the digestion of milk protein casein, which also gets converted into renin in the presence of HCl.
  • Castle Intrinsic factor helps in absorption in vitamin B12.
