Role of pancreatic juice in digestion

  • Pancreatic juice is a natural juice of the pancreas that consists of various enzymes and digestive hormones that aid in digestion.
  • Pancreatic juice passes through the pancreatic duct and enters the small intestine where digestion of carbohydrates, fats, and protein takes place.
  • The digestive enzymes of pancreatic juice along with their function are as follows;
  1. Lipase- Helps in the breakdown of fat.
  2. Protease- Breakdowns protein into amino acids and also protects intestinal flora.
  3. Amylase- Breaks carbohydrates into simple sugar.
  • Various hormones present in the pancreatic juice are insulin (Helps regulate glucose level in blood), Glucagon (Helps to increase the glucose level in blood), Gastrin, and amylin(Stimulates the stomach to produce gastric acid).
