RNA Polymerase is an enzyme that adds RNA nucleotides to a new RNA
strand.

One type of RNA Polymerase is involved in transcription, which
involves creating the primary RNA transcript from a DNA template.

Hope this helps.☺

RNA polymerase is also important because it unzips and unwinds the DNA double helix so that it can insert the 'free' RNA nucleotides during transcription. Transcription occurs as part of protein synthesis; it is the process of converting DNA to mRNA so that it is small enough to leave through gaps in the nucleus membrane. Once in the cytoplasm, it can be read by ribosomes (translation) to code for amino acids that create a specific protein chain.

Hope that puts it into perspective!
