Primer is a short strand of rna or DNA (about 18-22 bases) that serves as a starting point for DNA synthesis. It is required for DNA replication because the enzymes that catalyze this process, DNA polymerase  can only add new nucleotide to an existing strand of DNA. The polymerase starts replication at 3' end of the primer..

Specifically, messenger RNA (mRNA) carries the protein blueprint from a cell's DNA to its ribosomes, which are the "machines" that drive protein synthesis. Transfer RNA (tRNA) then carries the appropriate amino acids into the ribosome for inclusion in the new protein.
