there are many roles of saliva in digestion
1 it helps in make food slippy so it can easily pass through food pipe
2 it bread down complex starch in maltose and dextrin ( type of sugars )
3 it have enzyme called ptyalin ( useful in digestion of protein)

Saliva contains salivary amylase enzyme that breaks down starch into sugars like maltose .

Saliva keeps the mouth cavity clean and moistens the food that help in chewing and breaking down the big pieces of food into smaller ones .
