what is the role of saliva in the digestion of food?

Hi..
Saliva has amylase which breaks starch into maltose in the buccal cavity...
Almost 30% of starch is converted into maltose here..

Saliva has Saliva amylase, in the mouth cavity, which help in the digestion of starch into maltose , and make the food material soft, so that it can easily move through food pipe.
