saliva secretes an enzyme called salivary amylase which helps to digest the starch into maltose(simple sugar)

The main role of saliva is to lubricate the food that we are eating so that it can pass through our esophagus easily.
It also contains a special type of enzyme called ptyalin, which helps our body to breakdown the starch present in the food into simpler sugar in the mouth only.
