functions of saliva are as follows

saliva lubricates the inner lining of the moral cavity and the surface of the tongue to facilitate speaking and swallowing .

saliva acts as a solvent dissolving some food particles to stimulate taste buds of the tongue .

saliva helps food particles to stick together to form bolus so that they can be swallowed in a mass .



saliva digest starch
it has an enzyme called salivary amylase which converts starch into maltose .

saliva cleans the mouth and tends to destroy germs to prevent tooth decay .


dryness in mouth due to less water in saliva gives a feeling of thirst to replenish body water

thus saliva aids in water balance in the body
