Sarojini Naidu was born on 13th February 1897 in Hyderabad to Aghore Nath Chattopadhyay and Barada Sundari Devi. She married Govindarajulu Naidu at the age of 19 which was an inter-caste marriage.
She played an important role in women’s rights struggle in India by shaping Women’s Indian Association in 1917 with Annie Besant and others. The motive behind the formation of this association was to seek equal rights including the right to vote and represent.
In 1931, the Congress promised to implement women’s right to vote when it came in power. It was enacted along with India’s independence in 1947 and universal suffrage is a major facet in the Indian constitution.
