Answer:

Potassium dichromate is reduced by organic carbon compounds and subsequent determination of unreduced dichromate by oxidation reduction titration with ferrus ammonium sulfate. It is a wet oxidation method in which organic carbon is oxidized by K2Cr2O7 in the presence of H2SO4 leading to the formation of CO2. While organic Carbon is oxidized, K2Cr2O7 is reduced. The amount of oxygen consumed during the oxidation of organic carbon is calculated from the differences between the amount of K2Cr2O7 taken and the amount remaining after oxidation which is determined by titration with 0.05N Ferrus sulfate or ferrus ammonium sulfate. The equation during the oxidation presented as:

2K2Cr2O7+8H2SO4 = 2K2SO4+2Cr2(SO4)3+8H2O+3O2

3C+3O2 = 3CO2
