Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and tartaric acid . Baking powder is used in cakes to make of fluffy . When baking soda is heated a base is formed .

NaHCO3 when heated gives Na2CO3 + CO2

We know that base has bitter taste. So to neutralize the bitter taste tartaric acid is added .
