Answer:

Colon , being a part of large intestine plays a major role in absorption of water from the Gastrointestinal tract:

1. Colon has 3 parts

a) ascending colon

b) transverse colon

c) descending colon

Now colon has a rich supply of blood vessels namely the branches of superior mesenteric, Inferior mesenteric arteries.

The branches are named as ileocolic artery, right colic, middle colic and left colic arteries.

Such a rich supply of blood vessels encourage water absorption.

Water absorption can occur through the following routes :

1. Para-cellular route

2. Trans-cellular route

3. via AQUAPORIN channels.

Answer:

By the time indigestible materials have reached the colon, most nutrients and up to 90% of the water has beenabsorbed by the small intestine. Therole of the ascending colon is to absorb the remaining water and other key nutrients from the indigestible material, solidifying it to form stool. \
