What is the Role of the Police in
Investigating a Crime?
Answers
Answer:
The role of the police is to conduct a 360 degree investigation in a fair and impartial manner.
They must investigate and gather evidence in a transparent manner. Any material they gather that might undermine the prosecution of a suspect or assist in that persons defence must also be gathered and disclosed.
Once the evidence has been gathered it must be presented in a balanced and impartial way for the crown Prosecution Service to make a charging decision or present this evidence in court for them to decide a person guilt.
The police play various roles as follows:
★To investigate any complaint they receive regarding crime.
★To record statements of witnesses.
★To collect different kinds of evidence.
★To form an opinion after the investigation.
★To file a chargesheet in the court if the evidence collected points to the guilt of the accused person.
