Tropomyosin is a protein involved in muscle contraction.
Sarcomere:
- A sarcomere is the basic unit of muscle contraction.
- It is made of actin (thin) filaments and myosin (thick) filaments.
- During muscle contraction, the length of the sarcomere decreases.
Actin Filaments:
- Actin filaments are made of 2 filamentous actins (protein) helically coiled with one another.
- Two filaments of tropomyosin run along with the actin protein.
- Another protein troponin is distributed on the tropomyosin.
Role of Tropomyosin:
- At rest, tropomyosin covers the myosin-binding site on actin.
- On receiving a signal, troponin removes tropomyosin so that myosin can bind with actin.
- Sliding of actin filaments on myosin causes muscle contraction.
