As outlined in the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health (DPAS), WHO provides leadership, evidence-based recommendations and advocacy for international action to improve dietary practices and increase physical activity, including :
- holding discussions with the transnational food industry and other parts of the private sector in support of the aims of the Strategy, and of implementing the recommendations in countries;
- providing support for implementation of programmes as requested by Member States;
- promoting and supporting research in priority areas to facilitate programme implementation and evaluation, in close collaboration with organizations of the United Nations system and other intergovernmental bodies (FAO, UNESCO, UNICEF, United Nations University and others), research institutes and other partners;
- working with FAO and other organizations of the United Nations system, the World Bank, and research institutes on their evaluation of implications of the Strategy for other sectors;
- continuing to work with WHO collaborating centres to establish networks for building up capacity in research and training, mobilizing contributions from nongovernmental organizations and civil society, and facilitating coordinated, collaborative research as it pertains to the needs of developing countries in the implementation of the Strategy.
