Answer:
its really depends on your department and what you are looking for. To summarize, Stanford is not one of those institutions where there is nothing to do within a 50 mile perimeter which forces an active graduate student council to make weekly social activities. On the other hand, it is the norm for most graduate students to live on campus, which provides opportunities for ample official and unofficial socialization. It should also be noted that GSB and law students do not interact too much with PhD students (and also have very different social norms), so my answer is only applicable to PhD students.
If you are looking for big events, there are several parties for graduate students each year (depending how active student government is) plus grad prom. Additionally, the housing where young graduate students tend to congregate (Rains and EV Oasis for PhD students) tend to have more events for socializing. Still, there are much fewer opportunities for this type of socializing than among undergraduates.
Many departments have weekly socials (with alcohol) organized by graduate students, but the degree to which the department or class forms a cohesive social group varies among departments and by years. There are some departments (geology in my day) which have a reputation of being very social and cohesive. In other departments, people entering one year might maintain that social group throughout grad school, but other years might be frostier. And there are some departments where incoming students do not interact very much with one another.
On the individual level, Stanford PhD students tend to be hardworking, more concentrated in STEM and often from many different countries. Some stereotypes may apply, and self segregation is not unusual.
People who are very social by nature will have no trouble with social life at Stanford, especially when all of the off-campus opportunities are considered too. Other people might find Stanford to be colder and less-interacting than other environments they have been in. Others might discover a place with many like-minded people for the first time in their lives.
