The earnings of a surgeon depends on where does the surgeon practice? & the type of practice.
Example:
An Orthopedic surgeon who operates for joint replacement will earn much more than one who only mends broken bones. Those doing arthroscopic procedures earn somewhere mid way.
Surgeons practicing in metros & Tier 1 cities earn much more than Tier II, who in turn earn more than Tier III cities.
Surgeons in Govt institutions get fixed salary, which is nothing to be proud about.
Surgeons in private institutions take home only 40% (after taxes) of their listed fee as the hospital where they are attached takes 20%, Surgeons who are in private practice (read nursing homes) have cash practice (save tax) and despite their lower fee structure and even after the infamous practice of sharing revenue take home almost equal of a private institution.
Finally it depends on the number of surgeries done!
A wild guess a surgeon may take earn INR 5,00,000 and above per month and a superspecialist (neuro surgeon/ cardiac surgeon) in excess of INR 1 milllion a month. There are also general surgeons (appendix, hernia etc) who may be making 200,000-300,000 INR per month.
