On Diwali, million of lamps are lighted in houses and temples. They made up of recyclable materials like clay. Diwali literally means row of lamps. So It is understandable that lamps play the most important role in this festival.
“Deepa” means light or lamp, 'aavali' means a row. Deepavali means row of lights. There is a scientific reason behind deepavali. The scientific explanation for this is in the winter month a lot of insects multiply and destroy crops. When you light lamps in millions they came and fall into it, you dont kill them and so you dont earn sin/demeritic. It is the innate nature of this insects that they are attracted to light and die. Also, the oil used for those lamps is special oil called ILLUPPA ENNAI with some medical properties.
