when we breathe we take in air through our nose and our mouth.the air flows past the pharynx, glottis and then through larynx before ending up in the lungs. This breathing process is aided by the diaphragm,a large muscle between chest and abdomen. It moves down when we inhale and then up when we exhale. The phrenic nerves controls the movement and sensation if the diaphragm.Any irritation to these nerves induces the spasm of the diaphragm. This spasm causes the person to take a short quick breath that is then interrupted by the closing of epiglottis. The sudden closing creates the sound we all know as a hiccup. There are many reasons why phrenic nerves get irritated.one of the main reasons is full of stomach, caused by swallowing too much air or food.other reasons include eating hot and spicy food, rapid changes in temperature of the stomach, emotions like shock, excitement, stress etc...
