Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between the vocal cords snapsshut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nervesthat extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.

It is due to the sudden contraction and relaxation of phrenic or diaphragm muscles which causes a rapid flow of air into respiratory tract
