Geography is the study of the earth's surface & it's relationship with human beings. It is a subject in which emphasis is laid on understanding & explaining the changes taking place spatially .It encompasses the various physical, ecological & economic areas of study.Broadly, the subject is divided into two branches: 1.) Physical geography in which the landforms, reliefs, flora, fauna & their evolution, location, distribution & development are studied. It has sub areas like Geomorphology, Climatology, Biogeography, Oceanography etc.

2.) Human geography which deals with the spatial organisation & distribution of human beings and their activities, economies, transport networks, trade & commerce etc. It has sub topics like Economic geography, Transport geography, Population geography, geography of tourism,Political geography etc.

A third branch of geography is Cartography i.e. the study of map making. Advancement in technology has led to the usage of computers in cartography leading to branches like Geographical Information System (GIS) & Remote Sensing.

All the above mentioned branches of geography help us to have a better understanding of our environment, plan our actions & use of resources & associate our geographical knowledge with other subjects to make sense of various processes & their underlying factors.
