The seat of origin of lateral roots and cambium:

  • Lateral roots are the branching of the primary roots which are often called secondary roots. These branches of the primary roots arise from the pericycle of the primary root which is a parenchymatous tissue.
  • This parenchymatous tissue first forms a bulge by rapid growth of regional cells, into which a bud of the vascular tissue progresses and forms final secondary root.
  • Cambium is meristematic tissue that grows in between the xylem and phloem in the stem and in between the alternate regions of xylem and phloem in roots.
  • During the growth period, it cuts off new tissues – mainly phloem outwards and xylem inwards.
