Literally speaking, the setting of the poem is a "yellow wood," where two roads "diverge." This means that the speaker is in the woods in the early fall, when the leaves have turned yellow:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood...

The speaker is confused which road he should take and tries to look down one as far as he can, but realizes he does not know where each of them leads.

Metaphorically speaking, the setting of the poem is the speaker's mind. The phrase "yellow wood" may imply that he is at his later stage of life. In his mind, the speaker can see two roads, which represent the two options that he has, and he must choose one option. He cannot choose both options simultaneously. This proves to be an agonizing task for the speaker because he does not know where each option would take him:

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Both roads—that is, options—seem tempting, and the speaker wants to choose the one which will appear to be more meaningful in the long run. In the end, he rationalizes his final decision by saying that he took the road "less traveled."

The road not taken is a very beautiful poem written by Robert Frost.

The speaker of the poem is travelling through the forest and he was standing where the road was diverged in two direction. The poet was thinking which road had to take for the further journey. It was the yellow forest which symbolically representing the situation of the speaker. The pole atmosphere of the forest is symbolically represent the life journey of the poet.

When the speaker observed two roads it was found that one road was used one. Many travellers have been already passing through the way. The poet looked towards the road where it got turn. The poet thought that this was the road which had been taken by so many people, it means that this was the easy way to reach towards destination.

The poet had observed the second road which was completely grassy. It was less traveled. The grassy road was waiting to be used one but hardly people had taken it. It shows that it is little bit difficult road and people do not want to take this road because of difficulties and problems.

The poet symbolically represent that everyone in our life prefer to go through the easy way and do not want to accept the challenges of life.

When the poet has chosen the difficult or grassy Road he has thought that why didn't he had chosen the other way. Again he thought that maybe next day morning he will choose the remaining way, but at the same time he was also sure that this thing won't be happened as you won't come back. He was also regret that he could not choose both the way simultaneously.

Though it was the decision of the road but the poet symbolically representing the two different options of the life where many people are confused which option they have to choose.
