N_{3} ^{-}  has a linear structure.

  • The chemical formula  N_{3} ^{-}  represents an Azide ion. The Azide ion is the conjugate base of  the Hydrazoic acid (HN3). It is composed of the 3 Nitrogen atoms & can have the multiple resonance structures.

  • The central of Azide ion is N, forms the double bond with other 2 N atoms. Thus it has the 2 bonding domains & no lone pair of the electrons. This gives that it the hybridization of sp.

  • The Azide ion  ( N_{3} ^{-} )  has the 3 N atoms. In the lewis structure of  N_{3} ^{-}  ion contains 2 N = N bonds. Each of the outside N atoms have 2 lone pairs & the center nitrogen atom doesn't have lone pairs. There are charges on all the nitrogen atoms.

Hence the Shape  N_{3} ^{-} is Linear.
