India is mainly an agricultural country. Agriculture is the most important occupation for 60% of the population either directly or indirectly. In India, agriculture contributes about sixteen percent (16%) of total GDP and ten percent (10%) of total exports.
It is not the source of merely livelihood. It is the main source of food, fodder and fuel. It is the basic foundation of the economic development of the coutry.
Over 60 % of India’s land area is arable making it the second largest country in terms of total arable land. Agricultural products of significant economic value includes rice, wheat, potato, tomato, onion, mangoes, sugar-cane, beans, cotton, etc
If agriculture is not there The government and nation would fail to succeed. The agriculture means cultivation of crops, along with animal husbandry, poultry, dairy farming, fishing and forestry.

It contributes to National Income
Presently it is contributing around 24.4% to national income.
It is Main source of Food
After green revolution we are self sufficient in food production. The main crops together accounts to 195 million tonnes. Rice is produced around 100 million tonnes in India. Wheat production in India is around 95 million tonnes.
It contributes to even Industrial development
It provides essential raw materials for industries like cotton textiles, jute, sugar, vegetables, oil, tinned food, cigaters and rubber and many more food processing units.
Sources of Revenue
Land revenue, excise duties on agro based industrial goods, taxes on production and sales of agriculture machinery and tools and many more ways providing revenue to government.
Foreign trade revenue.
Lot of food & agriculture commodities like tea tobacco , coffee, spices, cotton textiles basmati rice, are being exported to many countries to generate foreign trade revenue. agricultural exports are around 70% of total exports.
Transport:
Lot of employment in transportation of agriculture products and it inputs like fertilizers and pesticides.
Agriculture savings:
THe farmers are generating surplus income which is contributed to country's economy in the farm of savings.
Capital formation
Use agriculture machinery, tools are helping in capital formation of the country. Excess income is invested in stock markets and in banks.
Source of employment:
Providing employment for crores of people in a way of agricultural labour, farmers, agriculture related industries etc,
Stability of inflation;
As agriculture is proving self sufficiency it is playing a big role in controlling inflation.
International Importance:
India is number 1 in ground nut and sugar production. Second in staple cotton and Rice production. Third in tobacco. India is pioneer in agriculture Research.
