For average atomic mass, we have to know about isomerism and isotopes.

Isotopes: are the compounds having same chemical formula but different masses.Ex-Cl35 and Cl37.

similarly, isomerism is the property that two compounds have same molecular formula but different masses.

So, for the shake of easiness we use average atomic mass.

This is the significance of average atomic mass.

For example hydrogen has 1 proton, 1 electron and no neutrons. Atomic mass is basically number of protons added to the number of neutrons, electrons are signifacantly lighter than both neutrons and protons therefore their weight is insignificant. It’s not really relevant to measure atomic mass with kg or g because you will have a lot of 0s therefore there is something called the atomic mass unit which you should add after you add to the total of protons and neutrons so basically our example hydrogen has a mass of 1u.

An element can have differing numbers of neutrons in its nucleus, but it always has the same number of protons. The versions of an element with different neutrons have different masses and are called isotopes.

The average atomic mass for an element is calculated by summing the masses of the element’s isotopes, each multiplied by its natural abundance on Earth.

When doing any mass calculations involving elements or compounds, always use average atomic mass, which can be found on the periodic table.
