Zener diodes are widely used as voltage references and as shunt regulators to regulate the voltage across small circuits. When connected in parallel with a variable voltage source so that it is reverse biased, a Zener diode conducts when the voltage reaches the diode's reverse breakdown voltage.

Zener Breakdown :
- This kind of breakdown occurs in heavily doped pn junction.
- Since p and n regions are heavily doped depletion layer of junction is very narrow. The reverse bias voltage sets up an electric field across the depletion layer.
- When the applied reverse bias increases, the electric field at junction becomes larfe enough to break covalent bonds of atoms, thereby generating a large number of electron hole pairs.
