Elections thus provide political education for citizens and ensure the responsiveness of democratic governments to the will of the people. They also serve to legitimize the acts of those who wield power, a function that is performed to some extent even by elections that are noncompetitive.

Elections also provide a way to punish the government or ruling party. If the people are not satisfied with the performance of the government then they can easily show them the way out in the next election. It become very significant if they want to punish say the party ruling in central government then they can vote against them in state elections and give them their disapproval of the policy pursued by them.
