Gold as understood by many is a precious metal that is thought to be expensive and was used as a source of wealth by ancient kings.
The significance of gold in the novel is that gold is a worldly treasure and can lead one to be obsessed with it. Silas Marner is obsessed with the gold he has and finds little or no time for human love and affection. Once his gold is stolen Marner finds love in Eppie's golden hair since it resembles his lost gold.
