Answer:
The diameter of the loose pulley is slightly less than that of the fast pulley so that when the belt is shifted on to the loose pulley, its tension is reduced. Power is transmitted only when the belt is on the fast pulley. Loose pulley takes care of the idling time of the machine and does not transmit any power

Question:-
What is the significance of loose and fast pulley??
Solution:-
- A fast and loose pulley arrangement is used on shafts to enable a machine to be started or stopped at will.
- A fast pulley is keyed to the machine shaft while the loose pulley runs freely.
- To transmit power the belt runs over the fast pulley and when the power is not needed the belt is simply pushed over or bypassed to the loose pulley which then rotates freely.
- This arrangement of pullies is very important in paper mill industries where stopping of one machine should not interfere with the other machines which are run by the same line shaft.
- Shown here is one such pulley system with loose pulley on the extreme left.
Additional information:-
A pulley loose on a shaft, to interrupt the transmission of motion in machinery. See Fast and loose pulleys, under Fast.
A fast pulley is keyed to the machine shaft while the loose pulley runs freely.
The belt runs over the fast pulley to transmit power by the machine and it is shifted to the loose pulley when the machine is not required to transmit power.
