1) Development of an organism occurs by meiosis. every organism starts its life from a single cell zygote. Repeated mitosis in zygote leads ti the formation of the whole body.
2) The growth of multicellular organisms is due to mitosis.
3) Cell growth results in distributing the ratio between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. It therefore becomes essential for the cell to divide to restore the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio.
4) A very significant contribution of mitosis is cell repair. The cells of the upper layer of the epidermis, cells of the lining of the Gut, and the blood cells are being constantly replaced.
5) Mitotic divisions in the meristematic tissues -- the apical and the lateral cambium, result in a continuous growth of plants throughout their life.

MITOSIS
Term coined by : Walter Flemming [in 1882]
Division first observed in plant cell by 'Strasburger'.
Division first observed in animal cell by 'Walter Flemming'.
Definition: Mitosis is a process in which a parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells. These cells are identical to each other as well as to the parent cell. Mitosis is also called equational division because the two daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as that present in the parent cell.
Significance of Mitosis
1) Growth: Mitosis is essential for the growth and development of multicellular organisms. A fertilized egg develops into an embryo which finally forms an adult by repeated mitotic division. Somatic cells of an organism are formed by mitosis.
2) Maintenance of cell size: Mitosis maintains the size of the cell. An overgrown somatic cell is induced to divide, so that it maintains a proper surface area to volume ratio, which is essential for proper functioning of cell.
3) Maintenance of chromosome number: Mitosis maintains the same type and number of chromosomes in two daughter cells.
4) Repair: It is mechanism for replacing old dead and worn out cells by the new cells.
5) Reproduction: It brings about reproduction in unicellular organisms.
6) Healing and regeneration: It produces new cells for healing the wounds and for regeneration.
