It is the defining raga of its own Thaat(a mode in Hindustani music). It is one of the basic and very important Ragas.

Bhairav is one of the names of Lord Shiva and it too has some of these masculine and ascetic attributes in its form and compositions. It is itself extremely vast and allows a huge number of note combinations and a great range of emotional qualities from valor to peace.

It makes use of Komal Rishabh and Komal Dhaivat and is usually performed in a devotional mood in the early morning hours. The vibrations of the notes in Bhairav is said to  be so powerful that it can clear one's mind completely.

Raga Bhairav is one of the basic and very important Raga or Raag in Indian Classical Music or Hindustani Sangeet.

It is included in 10 Thaats in Bhatkhande system.

Bhairav is also found in old scriptures in the name Maalav Thaat.

It is most enjoyable in early morning hours.
