When the epithelial cells are arranged in layers, one upon the other, with the basal layer still intact with the basement membrane, it is called as a Stratified Epithelium.
Stratified epithelium generally has 3 to more than 3 layers of cells.
It is found mostly lining those regions which are often exposed to mechanical or chemical stresses.
The above explains its functions which include
1. Protection of the underlying tissues, primarily
2. Maintenance of structural integrity, as a whole
Eg: Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium of human nails
