Cotton plays an important role in the Indianeconomy as the country's textile industry is predominantly cotton based. India is one of the largest producers as well as exporters of cotton yarn.

The cotton textile industry creates employment on a large scale in India. In ancient India, cotton textile were made with hand spinning and handloom weaving techniques.
This industry has close links with agriculture and provides a living to farmers, cotton ball pluckers, workers involved in weaving, spinning, designing, dyeing tailoring, etc.
The industry supports many other industries by creating demands like chemicals and dyes, packaging materials, mill stores and engineering works.
Although we have made significant increase in production of cotton, the need to import is still felt, power supply is fluctuating, machinery needs to be upgraded in the weaving and processing sectors.
