The Suez canal is a waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. It was opened in 1869 after 10 years of construction.

The canal is used by European maritime trade companies to exchange goods with India, China and South East Asia. Before its construction, the only way to make this journey was going around South Africa through the Cape of Good Hope route.As the info-graphic explains, the canal shortened this path by 8200 kilometers. This was a huge cut off at the time since sea trade was very costly then. Of course, this made maritime trade grow even more allowing global trade to be more powerful than ever.
