The writer is protesting the restrictions placed on her by those who want her to write a fairy tale, which is the significance of the title Once Upon a Time.

Three images—welcoming someone to their home, saying goodbye, and greeting someone—make up the first section of this poem. The poem's narrator explains to his son how people respond in those circumstances. They start by pretending to smile as they greet their friends and family. Although they formally extend a warm welcome to their loved ones, mentally they keep their doors closed. Finally, they put on a fake smile once more as they bid each other farewell while masking their egotistical feelings. When the speaker considers such things, he becomes so depressed that he somehow wants to unlearn such meaningless traditions. In order to rediscover the art of innocence and unadulterated joy, he yearns to be a child once more like his son.

Indeed, "they used to shake hands with their hearts" at one point. People only consider what the other person has to offer them these days. Even if they were in touch in the past, they feel like ignoring the person if they don't have what they need. The poet claims that today, people use various facial expressions. People today are so skilled at creating facial facades that they can easily fool someone.
