The story of the man from Udipi provides an insight into poverty against the changing times of India. The man from Udipi was a priest's son. As a child he always used to pray for a pair of shoes.

The story of the man from Udupi is -
- As a young boy he would go to school near an old temple where his father was a priest. He would stop briefly at the temple and pray for a pair of shoes.
- 30 years later the author visited his town and the temple , which was now drowned in an air of desolation.
- In the backyard where leave the new priest, there were red and white plastic chairs .
- A young boy dressed in a grey uniform, wearing socks and shoes ,arrived panting and threw his school bag on a folding bad .
- Looking at the boy the author remember the prayer another boy had made to the goddes when he had finally got a pair of shoes, "let me never lose them".
- The Goddess had granted his player young boys like the son of the priest now wore shoes.
- But many other like the Rag pickers in author 's neighbourhood remain shoeless.
