A plane:

A plane has wings that generate lift enabling it to fly. The engines sucks in, compresses and shoots out the air at the back generating thrust. It is a very efficient machine when it is at higher altitudes where the air is thinner and there is less drag.
A train:

A train runs on rails. It’s steel on steel contact decreases friction allowing this beast to be very efficient at pulling heavy loads for half the power, unless it’s going uphill then the train struggles because it doesn’t have enough grip.
So it’s very simple, a plane can lift the load while the train can pull the load.
