the endoplasmic reticulum is said to be the skeleton of the cell

it extends from the nuclear to the cell membrane

it thus acts as a supportive framework for the cell

endoplasmic reticulum in short E. R
is of two types
*rough E.R(has ribosomes studded on it ,it helps in protein synthesis )
*smooth E. R(no ribosomes studded,it secrets lipids )

other function
it helps in the exchange of materials between the nucleus and extra cellular environment
