SNOW rules state that if the current is flowing in an electric circuit from South to North direction and the magnetic compass is placed Over the conducting wire, the needle of the compass deflects in the West direction.
The purpose of SNOW rule is to find the direction of the magnetic field that is produced by the current-carrying conductor.
The direction in which the magnetic field lines circles around the conductor is from east to west when the current flows from south to north. Therefore, it can be said that the compass needle shifts towards the west when it is placed above the conductor.
