A simple solution is basically two substances that are evenly mixed together. One of them is called the solute and the other is the solvent. A solute is the substance to be dissolved (sugar). The solvent is the one doing the dissolving (water).

The solute, solvent and solution/non solution of sand and water is explained below-

  • A solution is formed by the addition of solute in the solvent. The solution is formed when the added solute is soluble in solvent.
  • The solvent is the substance which is generally present in excess amounts while solute is present in lesser amounts in the solution.
  • The addition of sand in water does not form a solution because sand is insoluble in water. It forms a mixture called suspension in which solute is in solid phase while solvent is in liquid phase.
