Savannah is an alluvial stream which is the source of much of the water that runs down through the Piedmont and across the Coastal Plains as its waters initiate in the mountains and the Piedmont and they usually move across the Coastal Plain to the ocean.

• In primitive time, as much as sixty percent of the land that is now Georgia was enclosed by ocean.
• When the ocean retreated, it left a mostly even land that is now called the coastal plains.
• The part where the prehistoric ocean’s shoreline lay - a region around twenty miles across - is called the fall line.
