Agriculture is the primary means of livelihood- potato, barley and peas being the main crops. Ladakh is a cold and arid region where the annual rainfall averages at 100 mm. Water from glacier melt has been the only source of irrigation for 80% of farmers in Ladakh

Answer:

Glaciers have been the only source of water for Ladakh because Ladakh is a  cold desert and it has a low average rainfall rate of 50 mm.  Glaciers provide water in the month of April/ May which is crucial for irrigation.  Farmers manage to grow two crops instead of one because Glaciers and their layers close to the village melt and provide water and the layer of ice above Glacier melts with increasing temperature and thus supply continuous water to the field.
