Western Disturbances is the source of winter rains in northern parts of India

EXPLANATION:

  • Western Disturbances are extra tropical storms originating in the Mediterranean region which brings abrupt winter rains to the north-western parts of the subcontinent of India. Western disturbances are non-monsoonal precipitation patterns propelled by the westerlies.
  • The moisture in Western Disturbances generally originates above the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Extra tropical storms are a universal phenomenon with moisture generally being carried in the upper atmosphere, whereas for tropical counterparts the moisture is carried in the lower atmosphere.
  • As regards the subcontinent of India, moisture at times drop as rain when the storm system meets the Himalayas. In the form of extra-tropical cyclones, Western disturbance emanates in the Mediterranean Sea. A high-pressure region is being developed across Ukraine and its surroundings, triggering cold air influx from Polar Regions into a comparatively warmer air area with high humidity.
  • It creates good conditions in the upper atmosphere for cyclogenesis that facilitate the formation of an extratropical depression heading towards the East. They are slowly crossing the Middle East, reaching the Indian Subcontinent from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.
