Given:

Refractive Index of the medium = 5/4

Speed of light in air = 3X 10⁸m/s

To find:

The speed of light in the given medium

Solution:

We know that the refractive index of a medium is the ratio of the speed of light in the vacuum to the speed of light in that medium.

Since it is a ratio, it is both unitless and dimensionless.

Thus RI = μ = c / V

Since given that μ  = 5/4

and c = 3X 10⁸m/s

V = c/ μ =  3X 10⁸m/s X 4/5

=2.4 X 10⁸m/s

Hence,  the speed of light in the medium is 2.4 X 10⁸m/s.
