What is the square of the number 98

 = (100 - 2) ^{2}

 =  {(100)}^{2}  - 2 \times 100 \times 2 +  {(2)}^{2}

 = 10000 - 400 + 4

 = 10004 - 400

 =9 604

Note we using this formula :

 {(a - b)}^{2}  =  {a}^{2}   - 2ab +  {b}^{2}
