square root of 144 is 12

√144 =12 only, as √ means the (+) ve number that squares to give the given the previous number.

But, if X^2 =144, then X= +12 or -12, as

X^2 =144

taking square root both sides:-

√(X^2)=√144

|X| =12, as X has to be a positive number as √ give (+)ve number that square to give the previous number.

Now | |, which called modulus function, give (+)ve for (-)ve number and (+) for (+) number.

i.e |-2| = -(-2) = 2 and, |2|=2

As, we don’t know whether X is + or -ve number, we take two cases:-

Case 1: X>=0: Then X=12, which is obvious

Case 2: X<0 : Then |X|=-X, Therefore -X=12, X=-12

Hence, X=+12 or -12
