The 6 Stages of Procrastination

It's no secret--college students are professional procrastinators. However, perfecting the art of waiting 'til the last minute takes lots of time and practice.
Stage One: False Security
This is where most of us reside for a better part of the semester. We have a syllabus that literally outlines the due dates for everything throught the whole semester. We look at it; we feel good. "This isn't due for quite a while," we say, tucking the syllabus away into the bottom drawer of our desk.
Stage Two: Laziness
As a due date creeps just the slightest bit closer, there's always that brief moment where we think, "Maybe I should go ahead and get started on this." We all know it will never happen, though. Think about the last time you finished something early--and by early, I don't mean 11:45 when the assignment is due at 11:59. Probably kind of a far-off, fuzzy memory, right?
Stage Three: Excuses
This is the stage where college students get the most creative. I've heard--and used--every excuse in the book to avoid starting on an assignment. Can't work at a dirty desk, so I bust out the antibacterial wipes and scour every inch of my desk...twice. The pile of dirty laundry that has been in the corner of the room for three days is suddenly urgent, better put that in the wash. And then that raises the issue of the fact that if I start working now, I'll have to stop to go transfer my laundry from the washing machine to the dryer... Better just wait.
Stage Four: Denial
The denial stage is, by far, the worst one. We tend to VASTLY overestimate ourselves and how long we can go without sleep, leading to a failed all-nighter, deep, deep disappointment, and leaving us with a STILL unfinished assignment, which brings us to our next stage...
Stage Five: Crisis
- This is the stage where you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror with unwashed hair, raccoon eyes, and a general look of disarray and realize...you screwed up. As you work yourself into a frenzy, you think back to the first stage and wish you had appreciated that bliss just a little more. Then you make a giant pot of coffee, turn on some inappropriately loud music, and get to work.
- Stage Six: Repeat
- We don't do it because we hate ourselves. We're just college students. No matter how early we're given our assignments, there's always going to be that temptation to wait...and we can't resist. Acceptance is the first step to admitting you have a problem, you know. We're fine.
