Onam is a festival of Malayalees or people in Kerala.

This Festival is celebrated in every year during Malayalam Month - " Chingnam " for 10 days ... The main day of Onam Festival is named as " Thiruonam ". This Malayalam month almost come in English month between August and September.

The festival is based on the story of a King called ' Mahabali ' or ' Maveli '. He belongs to Asura Family but he was unlike other asuras , a good , kind ruler. It is said that during his reign, there was no lies or crime between people, Because of his sincere rule over kingdom. This made the Gods greed as they cannot give punishment to people and all gods went to Lord Vishnu for a solution. This made Lord Vishnu to take his 5th Avatar ( in Dasavatara ) called Vamana. Lord Vishu in the form of Vamana ( poor little boy ) went to Mahabali and requested for 3 feet of Land. As Mahabali was Kind , he asked Vamana to take 3 feet, from anywhere he wanted. As Vamana kept his first foot , it covered whole Earth and 2nd step covered whole Aakash and when Vamana asked for 3rd Step , King Mahabali said him to keep 3rd step on his own back. Vamana, before keeping asked Mahabali for any of his last wish. Mahabali said his wish as let him visit His kingdom ( kerala ) every year in chingam on thiruonam. and Mahabali went inside under the Earth as Vamana kept his 3rd Feet. After this incident , everyone belives that Mahabali is watching them on onam and they makes the day full of happiness to show Mahabali that his Kingdom is enjoying and celebrating with happiness with his visit.
