The first antibiotic was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928. He was growing bacteria on agar plates and accidentally left one of the plates open. A mould started growing on the surface. This stopped the growth of bacteria. Fleming found that a substance secreted by the mould killed the bacteria. The mould was called Penicillium notatum. The substance from the mould was called penicillin. This wonder drug was the first antibiotic.
